Across West Africa, lesbian, bisexual and queer (LBQ+) activists are leading change and reinventing activism and movement-building. Yet even with their bold visions and powerful organization, LBQ+ movements remain deeply underfunded, and activists face insecurity, invisibilization and multiple forms of oppression.
“The only reason I'm here is because there's hope" said Layla, an activist, during a four-day convening by ISDAO in April 2024, which brought together 28 LBQ+ activists from across West Africa to build solidarity, reflect, and strategize for the future. This gathering created space for LBQ+ activists to share their lived experiences, make connections, and dream together about what a stronger, more connected, and adequately supported LBQ+ movement could look like.
The report, titled “Creating the Future We Want: LBQ+ Movement Building in West Africa", captures this powerful moment. Rich with stories, insights, and practical recommendations directly from activists themselves, the report highlights the critical issues facing LBQ+ communities and outlines the path forward toward a sustainable and thriving movement.
